A small update, two years later:
When we introduced the Color Analysis Camera, our goal was to bring one of the most important parts of physical draping into the home: the way different colors actually change the light reaching your face.
At the time, we wrote that this effect couldn’t really be reproduced digitally, which is why the Camera takes a different approach - it creates the changing colored light physically, using your phone screen, and photographs how your face responds. That is still one of the things people enjoy most about the feature, and it remains a great way to explore draping at home.
Since then, however, the science has moved forward.
A large new skin-spectra dataset gave us the opportunity to revisit the question: could the reflected-light effect be simulated digitally after all?
We tested it across thousands of real skin measurements and all of our draping colors, and the answer was much more encouraging than we expected. In the vast majority of cases, the digitally calculated reflected-color shift came extremely close to the physical model.
So we now have a second way to approach the same goal:

Different methods, same idea: getting much closer to the experience of real draping without leaving home.
